The daily RECORD LOW was broken between 12:51 AM and 1:51 AM when the air temperature crossed -15°F. Dangerous wind chill of -49°F, -52°F and -50°F was observed at 5:51 a.m., 6:51 a.m. and 7:51 a.m. respectively; and near all-time record low temperatures of -22°F were recorded at 5:51 a.m. and -23°F at 6:51 a.m. and 7:51 a.m. The lowest temperature Wednesday is expected to be recorded around 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Today is very likely to break the all-time record for the lowest high temperature in the history of official Chicago temperature observations. A high of -14°F is expected about 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The previous record low maximum temperature is-11°F, which occurred on January 18, 1994 and December 24, 1983.
On Thursday morning about 5:00 a.m., the low temperature is expected to tie the all-time record low for Chicago at -27°F. Temperatures will rise dramatically after 5:00 a.m. Thursday, but will only make it to a high of 3°F Thursday just before midnight Thursday/Friday. Temperatures will continue to rise overnight and during the day Friday, reaching a high of 22°F about 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
