Light snow bands intensified over northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Saturday night January 19, 2019 as expected. The National Weather Service expects that the multiple snow bands visible on radar 7:00 p.m. to 8:25 p.m. will merge into a stronger single plume later tonight or overnight when heavy snowfall is expected to develop with the plume. The plume is expected to develop over Lake County after 9-10 PM, move south over Cook County overnight, and finally move over northwest Indiana Sunday morning closer to sunrise. The greatest potential for snowfall is in Lake County, Illinois; Cook County and Lake County, Indiana. The greatest snowfall rates in Arlington Heights will occur after midnight.
Up to an additional 6″ inches could accumulate closer to the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Northerly 30 MPH gusts will gradually diminish to 20 MPH about 6:00 a.m. and persist until 1:00 p.m. Sunday. The snow will significantly diminish in Arlington Heights when the wind gusts diminish to 20 MPH.
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) shows snow bands off Lake Michigan expanding southwestward as they move north to south. Snow bands are expanding as far west as Kane County and Kendall County. The most intense band appears to be over Chicago’s south side and southwest side. Initially some bands were as far west as Cary in McHenry County.
