The Forest Preserves of Cook County reported on December 28, 2018 that after a thorough investigation, the Forest Preserves Police Department has determined that a post alleging two dogs were sickened by treats laced with poison is untrue.
The department clarified that a dog that became sick was not sickened by rat poison-laced treats, as earlier reported by an animal shelter, but was sickened by ingesting a mushroom that was off the trail in the forest preserve at Linne Woods.
The Forest Preserves District of Cook County said that a dog that was allowed to run off-leash, ate a mushroom that made it ill. The forest preserve district stated personnel were happy to report the dog required no medication after being examined by a vet and is fully recovered.
Please follow Forest Preserve ordinances that require dogs to be kept on-leash at all times. And please call our non-emergency line, 708.771.1000, to report anything suspicious or problematic in the forest preserves—and 911 in an emergency. The safety of our visitors, two-legged and four-legged, is always our primary goal. — at Linne Woods.
According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) there are at least 2,000 species of mushrooms in Illinois. The IDNR reports that some Illinois mushrooms are edible, some are poisonous, and some are deadly poisonous. THE IDNR advises that no mushroom should be eaten until it is been properly identified by an expert. The IDNR states that the guide provided on IDNR website should not be used to determine whether a mushroom is safe to eat.
