The Heartland Animal Shelter is warning residents near Morton Grove two dogs are now fighting for their lives after eating “treats” at Linne Wood.
Heartland Animal Shelter warned dog owners in Morton Grove and Niles Monday afternoon, December 24, 2018 after receiving reports that “rat-poison-laced treats” may have been scattered on a trail at Linne Woods Forest Preserve at Dempster Street and Lehigh Avenue. The animal shelter, based in Northbrook at 2975 Milwaukee Avenue, reports that two dogs are fighting for their lives in a veterinary emergency room.
Forest Preserves of Cook County police responded to the reports and are actively investigating. Two shifts of officers to searched the trail, nothing suspicious was found.
The common symptoms of this type of rat poisoning include impaired movement and muscle tremors. The active ingredient is likely Bromethalin, which is known to cause incoordination (ataxia), tremors, seizures, paralysis, and eventually death. According to the Animal Poison Control Center Pet Poison Helpline, the more an animal eats, the more severe the clinical signs may be. Symptoms and signs can develop within 2 hours, but may be delayed as long as 36 hours. Thus, medical monitoring for at least 24 hours after ingestion is often necessary.
Bromethalin is one type of Active Ingredient in rat poison. For more information see petpoisonhelpline.com | Mouse and Rat Poison: Rodenticides Poisonous to Dogs & Cats
