Rollover crash into the newly constructed Arlington Heights Police Station at 200 East Sigwalt Street near Arlington Heights Road and Pine Avenue.
Arlington Heights police have released updated information about a rollover crash into the newly constructed police station that occurred on Sunday November 11, 2018, at about 5:28 PM when police officers from the Arlington Heights Police Department and firefighter/paramedics from the Arlington Heights Fire Department responded to 200 East Sigwalt Street, Arlington Heights, Illinois. The traffic crash involved entrapment of a male adult driver. The identity of the driver was not immediately released, pending his arrest.
The crash involved a 2015 Volkswagen GTI that left the roadway at a high rate of speed. The vehicle rolled over and ultimately struck the new Arlington Heights Police Department police station located at 200 East Sigwalt Street. The crash caused substantial damages to the vehicle, as well as the building that was in its final stages of construction.
Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 44 year-old male, originally believed to reside in Brookhaven, Georgia. He was actually a resident of Arlington Heights, having moved to the area in August of 2018. As of Wednesday, November 15th, 2018, the driver’s condition improved from critical to fair at Northwest Community Hospital, with none of his injuries expected to be life threatening and his release from emergency care imminent.
Furthermore, the results of the investigation, which relied upon witness testimony, traditional accident reconstruction techniques, surveillance video and the event data recorder (vehicle black box) from the 2015 Volkswagen GTI, showed the vehicle was traveling northwest bound on Davis Street, at about 104 MPH, before it struck a curb, lost control and continued westbound onto Sigwalt Street. wherein the vehicle ultimately collided with the building. None of the sources of evidence suggested the collision was a purposeful act. Instead, police report that crash was clearly a result of the recklessness of the driver.
In addition to the reckless speeds involved in the incident, police say impairment, by way of drugs, was also a factor involved in the crash. The investigation revealed evidence linking cocaine and, possibly, prescription drugs to the crash.
Upon release from Northwest Community Hospital, the driver of the 2015 Volkswagen GTI will be charged with Reckless Driving, Driving under the Influence of Drugs, and miscellaneous traffic citations.
An assessment of the damages to the Arlington Heights Police Department was conducted by an engineering professional who deemed the harm non-structural in nature. While the final delivery of the building for occupancy will be slightly delayed, repairs are already underway.
