McHenry FPD firefighters responded about 9:00 p.m. Thursday to Windy City Wings, 1266 N. Green St., to a report of flames coming from the business. Firefighters arrived and reported a downed power line on the building that was arcing and had started a fire. Firefighting was delayed because of safety issues regarding the down power line and energized structural parts of the building. It is likely that water could not be put on the fire near the arcing lines, until the arcing stopped when Com Ed arrived to cut the power. Also, high winds, gusting 40-50 mph, intensified conditions that allowed the fire to spread throughout the structure rapidly.
The extra alarm fire was a MABAS Box Alarm to the third level — similar to a 3-11 alarm in the City of Chicago. Surrounding communities came to the aid of McHenry FPD firefighters.
No injuries were reported — not confirmed by fire officials.
