McHenry police were investigating a property damage crash when an alleged drunk driver crashed into the rear of one of two police cars, which pushed the vehicles into a second police vehicle about 7:30 a.m. Sunday October 20, 2018 on Elm Street (Route 120) near Park Lane.
Two people were injured when the alleged drunk driver struck two squad cars.
Police officers were investigating a crash in the block of 5200 Elm Street (Route 120) when a blue 2008 Toyota Matrix traveling eastbound rear-ended a marked police vehicle. The collision caused the marked police vehicle and the Toyota to strike an unmarked McHenry police car, also at the scene.
The first police vehicle that was rear-ended was unoccupied. The second police vehicle stuck was occupied by the citizen who was involved in the previous crash. The citizen was not injured in the crash.
There were four occupants in the Toyota Matrix. The driver and one passenger were transported to Northwestern McHenry with injuries that were reported to be non life-threatening. The passenger was apparently not wearing a seat belt.
The two other passengers were not transported and refused medical treatment. Route 120 was closed for about an hour.
The driver of the Toyota Matrix, Magdalena E. Wojtach, age 22, of Fox Lake, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; failure to yield to a stopped emergency vehicle; driving without insurance; possession of open alcohol in a vehicles; and driving while intoxicated.
