Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:28 PM Monday to a hazmat level 1 with an explosion risk at a warehouse building at 3196 North Kennicott Avenue. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a truck hit the side of a building and ruptured a valve — causing about 50 gallons of diesel fuel to leak with some of the leak flowing into the warehouse building.
A local area near the building was evacuated near Kennicott Avenue and University Drive and also Kennicott Avenue and Dundee Road.
Firefighters worked immediately to stop the leak while checking explosive limit levels to monitor the chance of an explosion. Firefighters used dikes to stop the flow of diesel into a storm drainage receptacle. The leak was also stopped with putty placed in a hole in the tank.
Firefighters discovered that a diesel tank under the semi-trailer was punctured when the truck descended down a steep ramp to a loading dock. The bottom of the trailer basically bottomed out on the surface at the bend from level ground to the ramp.
