Batavia police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:50 a.m. Friday September 14, 2018 to a report of a serious crash on Randall Road in the block of 500 North Randall Road near Mill Street and the GQT Randall 15 IMAX. Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including an Oberweis refrigerated box truck, a white limousine, and two other passenger cars.
The preliminary investigation by Batavia Police Department has revealed that two people were assisting a disabled motorist with a vehicle in the outside lane of northbound Randall Road. The disabled vehicle and two people were struck by a truck that was traveling northbound on Randall Road. The assisting people were injured while they were outside of any vehicles. The collision caused serious injuries to the people that were assisting.
One person was deceased at the scene. A second person was transported to an area hospital and began to received treatment for serious injuries. A third person was also transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
UPDATE: The Kane County Coroner identified the man killed as Nicholas Ortiz, age 48, of Montgomery. His identity was released Friday evening. Police say Ortiz and another person were assisting a motorist in a disabled vehicle.
The identities of the people involved in the crash were not initially released because of pending notification of the next of kin.
The investigation into the traffic crash is ongoing. The roadway was closed for an extended period, but was cleared and reopened to normal traffic by 10:15 a.m.
The Batavia Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash.
