Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics and police responded about 8:05 a.m. Monday to a report of a vehicle into a building with a natural gas leak near the intersection of Tower Road and National Parkway. Firefighters on the scene reported a high pressure gas line was hit and a large amount of gas was leaking. Firefighters requested that Nicor expedite to the scene.
Winds are strong — from the southwest at 25 mph with gusts to 36 mph. The building at 1115 Tower Road was evacuated. Employees in buildings east of the location also smelled a strong smell of gas. As a precaution, employees in buildings east of the crash were also being evacuated Monday morning.
Nicor arrived about 8:22 a.m. Monday. The gas leak was shut down about 8:23 a.m. with firefighters reporting the hazard was removed. However firefighters are still keeping a safe perimeter around the crash scene until safety work is complete.
