The Academy had originally banned Baron Cohen from appearing in character at the ceremony, but reluctantly agreed to the publicity stunt.
The publicity stunt was staged for the upcoming film ‘The Dictator’ about the Republic of Wadiya, due to be released Summer of 2012.
On February 24, 2012, Admiral General Aladeen appeared live on NBC’s Today Show with Matt Lauer’s cleaning lady, Ann Curry and the eunoch Al Roker.

Judging from comments on various articles and YouTube videos about ‘The Dictator,’ there’s a significant divide on how people feel about his humor.
Strangely, several videos from the movie’s official YouTube channel are not viewable in the United States.
