VIDEO: Palatine apartment fire on Carol Court; extinguished within 30 minutes.
Palatine firefighters and Cook County Sheriff’s deputies responded about 6:32 p.m. Tuesday to 1434 Carol Court to a report of a balcony fire possibly involving the second and third floor of an apartment building with a Mansard roof. The fire turned to be an apartment unit fire on the second floor. Cook County Sheriff’s Police officers assisted residents prior to the arrival of the fire department. Flames and smoke were showing out windows of the three-story apartment building.
The first Palatine Fire Department crew arrived on the scene in 5 minutes and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the window of a second floor unit. There were initial reports of an occupant still trapped in the third floor unit that was directly over the fire unit. The first arriving crew conducted a search for the occupant, but it turned out there was nobody trapped. An aggressive interior attack with a 1 ¾ inch preconnected hose line was initiated and brought the fire under control.
Upon arrival, firefighters immediately called for assistance from Arlington Heights firefighters and declared that they had a working fire. Firefighters raised a ladder tower truck and quickly knocked down the flames that were showing out the windows with the aggressive interior attack. A second floor apartment unit was the main fire unit.
The fire was declared under control by about 7:00 p.m. Firefighters reported some signs of extension in venting or ductwork in the building.
At least two civilians were treated by firefighter/paramedics. Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighter/paramedics treated the first victim. Long Grove Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics treated the second victim. There were four people in the fire unit at the time of the fire. One adult male suffered minor burn injuries and an adult female had to be transported for a medical condition which developed while firefighters were on the scene. Both patients were transported to Northwest Community Hospital. No firefighters or police officers were injured.
Twenty-one members of the Palatine Fire Department along with personnel from the Arlington Heights Fire Department, Long Grove Fire Department and Palatine Rural Fire Protection District responded to the scene. The unit where the fire originated was deemed uninhabitable because of the damage. The remaining five units of the three story building were tenable, but residents had made arrangements to stay somewhere else for the night. Damage was estimated at $75,000.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
