Wauconda police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:41 p.m. Monday to a four-vehicle crash at Route 12 and Old McHenry Road, just north of the Wynstone Golf Club in North Barrington. Rescuers arrived to find two victims with life threatening injuries and four victims with non-life-threatening injuries.
Reports from the scene released by officials indicate that a mid-size truck carrying roofing materials was northbound on Rand Road, ran a red light and struck the rear passenger-side door of a 2000 Lincoln Continental that was turning left from southbound Rand Road to Old McHenry Road. The truck rolled over and struck two other vehicle at the intersection after striking the first vehicle.
Griffin Shirey was sitting near the impact side of the crash by the rear passenger door. He was transported to Advocate Good Shephard Hospital in Barrington, where he was pronounced dead. Griffin Shirey’s brother was airlifted to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was listed in critical condition with internal injuries. The boys’ father was transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Advocate Good Shephard Hospital.
Wauconda Fire District requested an EMS Box Alarm, which brought assistance of firefighter/paramedics from Barrington, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Mundelein and Round Lake to the scene or for fire station coverage for Wauconda.
Accident investigators were on the scene until about 10:30 p.m. and the intersection was also closed until about 10:30 p.m. A witness reported on a post on an online forum (sigforum.com) that the truck driver tried to beat the red light while a car was making a left turn on a yellow light.
The driver of the pickup was arrested with toxicology tests underway.
