Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:11 p.m. Monday to a report of a transformer explosion and arcing at the intersection of Maple and Daniels. One minute later firefighters received a report that a box truck hit power lines in the 300 block of South Hicks Road. At first the driver was reported still in the truck, but he got out of the truck on his own before firefighter/paramedics arrived.
Lines were popping when firefighters arrived, and firefighters and police immediately closed northbound and southbound lanes of Hicks Road. Firefighters searched the area carefully and discovered lines were pulled off pulls and that several poles were damaged.
A resident also reported lines arching west of the crash scene. Firefighters inspected the area and found no smell of smoke.
Com Ed arrived on the scene about 6:46 p.m. Monday and were immediately going to work on the power problem.
