Upcoming Run & Fun Run/Walk Event on Saturday, November 12, 2011.
Gloria Schmidt was a hard-working, family-centered and giving person who had a lot of dreams and aspirations prior to her passing on July 9, 2009 from lung cancer at the age of 48. While she fought a long battle and difficult battle, she did not give in easily. Even though she has passed, she is not alone and she is with us along the way, each and every day. Lung cancer robs us of more Americans each year than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined; lung cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, smoking history, or skin color. Lung cancer stole Gloria’s breath, future, and life, and now Gloria’s family has decided to do something about it. This year’s Breathe Deep Busse Woods marks the first year of the event.
Breathe Deep Busse Woods aims to bring together hundreds of area supporters to celebrate the lives of those who have been affected by lung cancer while raising funds for critical early detection and targeted therapeutics research that will ultimately stop lung cancer.
On Saturday, November 12, the 2011 Breathe Deep Busse Woods will take place at Busse Woods Forest Preserve in Elk Grove Village, IL. The Preserve is located at E. Higgins Road (Rt. 72) between Rt. 53 and South Arlington Heights Road. Participants may choose to register for the 5K timed run or the more leisurely 5K untimed walk/fun run. Event day registration and check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. The event includes team photos, so gather your group together and bring them towards the registration table. Local Athletico employees will be helping stretch and massage runners/walkers prior to and after the event. Along with this we have many fun venders like PopChips and Corner Bakery who will be helping make our event a little more tasty!

About Breathe Deep Busse Woods
Breathe Deep Busse Woods is a grassroots event that was started this year by Ralene Hall, who lost her mother to lung cancer. Many of the volunteers who make this event possible do so because they have friends and family who have been affected by lung cancer and would like to help others by raising much-needed lung cancer research dollars. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America. It impacts 1 in 14 Americans, and takes more lives than breast, prostate, colorectal, ovarian, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancers combined. About 55% of all newly diagnosed lung cancer patients are former smokers or have never smoked. Lung cancer kills almost twice as many women as breast cancer and more than twice as many men as prostate cancer. There is currently no reliable early detection test available.
