About 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced each year. The top pumpkin-producing states in the U.S. include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California. The Illinois Department of Agriculture reported in 2004 that 95% of the U.S. crop intended for processing is grown in Illinois.

In 2004 Frey Farms — located in Keenes, Illinois — sold one million pumpkins to Wal-Mart, which ships them to its stores nationwide. Another 500,000 pumpkins were sold to other buyers.
Two pumpkin plants near Peoria, Illinois are the largest processors in the nations — Libby’s in Morton, and Seneca Foods in Princeville.
