Flashover and sprinkler room demonstration and comparison shows one room with a fully-engulfed flashover fire at 2,000°F and another sprinkler-installed room contained to a burning couch.
Disney couldn’t have done it any better. On Saturday, Palatine Fire Department hosted an open house for kids, kids at heart, fire buffs and citizens of the Palatine area who are interested in the fire, rescue and emergency medical service provided by Palatine Fire Department, CERT volunteers from the Palatine Emergency Management Agency, the Animal Response Team, and the Fire Rehabilitation Team.
Stellar demonstrations included automobile extrication techniques, fire extinguisher training; a live burn demonstration of a flashover room and a sprinkler room compared; and a FLIGHT FOR LIFE medical helicopter landing, standby, and takeoff.

Kids also were able to participate in a firefighter drill that included an agility activity, a hose pack carry, and a lifesaving rescue dummy drag. In another demonstration, kids were able to hold on to a real charged hose line and see what it was like to knock down a fire (simulated).
Exhibits included a fire safety model of a home, burnt and melted household objects that kids and adult were asked to identify, technical rescue equipment, the water rescue and dive team, hazmat suits, and more.
There was also a classroom session with Mr. Wizard, who instructed children and adults on the physics of fire and combustion. Children also built and painted toy Fire Boats with materials and tools provided by Home Depot with staff on hand for the entire Open House. The material used to build the flashover and sprinkler room demonstration was also donated by Home Depot.
Video of McHenry-base Flight for Life helicopter Landing Zone at Cardinal Park on Illinois Avenue in Palatine, Illinois.
The Flight for Life helicopter, which was due to arrive at 11:00 a.m. was diverted to a actual call. To guests’ delight it was able to return just after 1:00 p.m. Immediately after the Flashover/Sprinkler Room demonstration, guests of the Palatine Fire Department open house turned their attention to Cardinal Park where a Flight for Life Eurocopter MBB-BK 117 C-2 zoomed in for a landing. The McHenry base standard crew of a pilot, flight nurse and flight paramedic were on hand to answer questions and show the helicopter and medical equipment. The Flight for Life helicopter is based out of the Flight for Life-McHenry Base. Flight for Life Transport System also has a two additional helicopters — one based in Waukesha/Milwaukee and in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Air transportation services are provided by Air Methods.
