Algonquin police and firefighter/paramedics responded just before 12:20 p.m. Sunday to the Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market grocery store at 100 S. Randall Road in Algonguin to a call-in report of a fire in the deli with coinciding automatic fire alarm. The fire was reported extinguished with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
Police say that Fabian J. Torres, 24, of Sleepy Hollow was charged Sunday with aggravated arson after he caused the fire at the Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market, police said.
Fabian J. Torres allegedly threw an incendiary device, consisting of a bottle filled with flammable liquid, into a large group of people standing near the deli department.
Torres fled the store and was chased by a shopper and an off-duty Carpentersville police officer who detained the suspect as police and firefighters arrived. The suspect’s vehicle was discovered by police and cordoned off.
One man, who was close to the attack of the incendiary device, was injured during the incident. He was treated and released at the scene in the parking lot.
Algonquin Police said Sunday evening Fabian J. Torres would be transported to the McHenry County Jail, and he was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The grocer remained closed Sunday, but was open Monday.
