Police-Involved Shooting Kills Man at 71st St and Clyde Ave, Chicago — Immediate Protests Follow

Chicago police investigated about 6:30 p.m. Saturday July 14, 2018 a man that they say was “exhibiting characteristics of an armed person” and went to question him, according to tweet by CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Three or four officers on foot saw the man, and approached him, according to police.

Police say a confrontation then ensued, and the man was shot. A weapon was recovered at the scene, according to Anthony Guglielmi

Police said the shooting took place at 2098 East 71st Street about 5:30 p.m in the South Shore neighborhood. The address is near the intersection of 71st Street and Clyde Avenue. The area is surround by retail businesses and offices. Metra electric train traffic was stopped in the area, which is less than two miles south of the Museum of Science and Industry.

The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, but one witness told WGN reporter Gaynor Hall that police were doing CPR before paramedics arrived, and also said the man was lying on the street for about 15 minutes before paramedics arrived.

The identity of the man has not yet been released, some witnesses or passers by at the scene said the man is well known in the neighborhood and harmless.

The police officers initially involved were not injured, but several officers were injured from thrown rocks and bottles in a spontaneous demonstration. Four demonstrators were arrested.
