Minot, North Dakota Braces for Historic Flood

Nearly 10,000 residents of the town of Minot, North Dakota have evacuated as flood waters top levies of the Souris River. Officials say thousands of homes and businesses in the town will be inundated in the next week.


In 1969, a severe flood on the Souris River devastated Minot. The Army Corps of Engineers straightened the path of the river through the city after the flood and built several flood control structures.

Officials in North Dakota’s fourth-largest city said Thursday they had done all they could to protect critical infrastructure from the rising Souris River as it headed toward a record flood.
