James Arthur Ray has been found guilty of negligent homicide in the deaths of three people at an Arizona sweat lodge in October 2009. Jurors reached their verdict Wednesday after a four-month trial.

The three victims were among 56 total participants that were charged $9,695 each to participate in Ray’s “Spiritual Warrior” retreat. Another 18 people were hospitalized for heat-related illness, includiung burns, respiratory arrest, kidney failure, loss of consciousness and dehydration. Ray did not restrain or physically force people to remain in the tent, but he urged participants to stay inside heated environments and encouraged them to overcome their weakness.
Court proceedings later this week will determine sentencing.
