Arlington Heights police received two reports Friday night of suspicious activity related to solicitors. The first report about 9:35 p.m. Friday regarded a suspicious person in the 600 block of Carlyle Lane near Euclid Avenue. Police received a report that a male/Asian, wearing a blue shirt with the word Platinum on the shirt was selling GE or Honeywell service, and was also trying to gain entry into houses. The offender was last seen walking southbound on Carlyle.
The second complaint about 10:30 p.m. Friday reported a solicitor in the area of North Wilshire and Fleming. Police received a report well after the 9:00 p.m. village ordinance cutoff time for solicitors that a solicitor had been in the area for the past six hours, and a request that the solicitor be checked. The solicitor was described as a female/white in her 20’s wearing a shirt with GE/Platinum displayed. The solicitor also claimed she was from GE/Platinum, and was asking questions about security systems.
A search on Google regarding GE Platinum Home Security systems yields information about aggressive and questionable practices including the following.
The alarm system is free, but the monthly subscription to monitoring is not. Collections start promptly if the subscription fee is not paid.
Persistent knocking or ringing of door bells. Some push there way inside the doorway. As a last resort, some ask to use the bathroom.
Offering to upgrade alarm systems that don’t need upgrading.
Difficult cancellation of the contract/agreement.
