Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that honors American servicemembers on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War, and was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Memorial Day Ceremony

On May 30, 2011, Memorial Day events in Arlington Heights include a Parade through downtown from Sigwalt and Arlington Heights Road to Memorial Park, a Ceremony in Memorial Park immediately after the parade (11:00 a.m.), and a Tolling of the Bells from churches across town.

At about 11:30 a.m., while the names of 58 fallen servicemen from Arlington Heights are read aloud in Memorial park, church bells will ring from churches around town.

> Sigwalt and Arlington Heights Road westbound
> Right turn at Dunton Ave, proceeds northbound Dunton Ave
> Continues northbound to Euclid Avenue, crossing Route 14
> Left turn at Euclid Ave, proceeds westbound Euclid Ave
> Left turn at Chestnut Ave
> Ends at Memorial Park at Chestnut Ave and Fremont St

American Post No. 981 Veterans of Foreign Wars will host the Memorial Day Parade at 9:30 a.m. May 30.

The honor guard from the U.S. Navy will be marching in the parade and will stand around the Fallen Hero bricks. The 85th Army band will be playing and the U.S. Marine Corp color guard will also be present.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., will award two World War II veterans from Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights with the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart, which is awarded to veterans who have been wounded or killed while serving with the military.
