UPDATE: Suspicious device was not explosive. The device was a geocache tube which is part of a geocache game or high-tech hide and seek game.
Evanston police responded about 1:45 p.m. Sunday to the area of Grove Street and Ridge Avenue near Alexander Park to a report of an explosive device.
A small explosive device described as a small carbon dioxide container which was altered to make a device similar to a pipe bomb.
The Cook County bomb squad responded to the scene to investigate managed the resolution of the device.
Cricket bombs are small, but there is a report of a metal fragment from a CO2 cartridge causing a through-and-through wound in the lower leg of a juvenile who detonated a ‘cricket bomb’ with a fuse that was too short.
A through-and-through wound is a wound that has an entrance wound and an exit wound.
