Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded to two scenes on the South Side late Monday to a report of several people shot. One scene was at or near Ellis Park, and the other scene was near West Pullman Park. Overall, 21 people were shot in Chicago during a 14-hour span on Monday, June 25, 2018. Significant statistics involved the death of two men and the wound in of four boys under the age of 18.
Chicago police say six young people were shot and wounded at Ellis Park on the city’s South Side, where police, firefighters and paramedics were initially dispatched to 35th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood — about 10 blocks east of MLB Chicago White Sox stadium Guaranteed Rate Field.
Police responded to the Ellis Park shooting about 10:45 p.m. Monday June 25, 2018 to 35th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and the address on Vincennes Avenue on the west side of Ellis Park.
Near Ellis Park, a 15-year-old boy who was shot in an ankle. Other gunshot victims — all listed in good condition or stable condition — ranged in age from 19 to 27.
About 10:50 p.m. Monday, police responded to the block of 12300 South Yale Avenue — about one block east of West Pullman Park — to a report of a shooting. Police discovered that a 19-year-old male shooter opened fire from an alley in the West Pullman neighborhood. The 19 year-old male shooter was killed when someone returned fire. A 13-year-old boy (transported to Comer’s Children’s Hospital), a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were wounded in the encounter.
The overall scenes were chaotic because some gunshot victims did not wait at the scene for help, arriving at hospitals on their own. After the shootings, some of the victims with gunshot wounds refused to help police with their investigation, according to Chicago police.
Earlier Monday night, police and paramedics responded near 61st Street and Martin Luther King Drive about one block southeast of the Washington Park Lagoon to a report of a shooting. Police discovered the shooting involved an 11-year-old boy, who was shot in the leg by a stray bullet while walking to the store. The boy was listed in stable condition, and police believe the boy was not the intended target of the shooting. The Eden Green neighborhood and the Riverdale Community Area borders suburban Riverdale, separated by the Little Calumet River.
The other fatal shooting Monday, that occurred about 3:00 p.m. in the block of 13300 South Prairie in the city’s Eden Green neighborhood (Riverdale Community Area), was not near a Chicago park. Derrick D. Golden, age 46, was in a vehicle with a female passenger when she started to argue with someone. Derrick D. Golden was shot 5-7 times in the chest. He was transported to Level I Trauma Center University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
From about 12:20 a.m. to 10:50 p.m. Monday, 23 people were reported shot in Chicago. As of early Tuesday, no suspects were in custody for any of the shootings.
