Hebron and Wonder Lake firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:36 AM Saturday June 16, 2018 to a report of an airplane crash at Galt Airport, 5112 Greenwood Rd Wonder Lake, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a small private plane crashed at Galt Airport with two people injured onboard.
A Flight For Life medical transport helicopter was dispatched and landed on the runway at Galt Airporrt. Flight for Life transported the pilot to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The pilot was described as a male, age 42, from Fox Lake. His passenger was described as a female, age 15. The female passenger was assessed by paramedics at the scene, and was not transported.
There was no fire involved with the aircraft, but the aircraft was severely damaged. A witness described that the crash occurred during takeoff. The right wing lowered just after the aircraft left the runway. The wing may have hit the grassy ground or shrubs and flipped, with major damage to both wings and the tail section.
The aircraft was a kit aircraft known as an AirCam. The Air Cam is a twin-engine kit airplane with capacity for two passengers in a tandem configuration. There are reports of some AirCam aircraft configured with three seats, but the configuration is not recommended by the current manufacturer.
The ultralight aircraft kit manufacturer of the crashed FAA-registered aircraft (N81047) is listed as LEZA Aircam International with headquarters in Sebring, Florida. The actual aircraft is listed as manufactured by RGJ Aviation LLC. LEZA does not appear to be in business under the original name. A business website simply known as AirCam.com lists current kits manufactured by Lockwood Aircraft Corp at the same address of the former LEZA Aircam International in Sebring, Florida.
According to FAA records, the aircraft is owned by Wilmington, Delaware corporation Two If By Sea, LLC.
Galt Airport was hosting an annual Barnstormer’s Day Fly-in and Drive-in when the crash occurred. Barnstormer’s Day features an old style fly-in with a pancake breakfast, display of vintage aircraft — including biplanes.
Galt Airport is a single-runway airport (Runway 9/27) located in Greenwood Township, just north of Wonder Lake. The airport uses a Wonder Lake address.
Winds at Greater Rockford Airport were from the South about 12 MPH, recorded at 9:54 AM and 10:54 AM. Winds at Janesville, Wisconsin were South at 9 and 7 MPH at the respective times. Winds on the runway were apparently cross winds at the time of the crash.
The FAA is investigating the crash.
