Green Bay Road and Highwood Avenue, Highwood, Illinois — scene of fatal train accident with pedestrian United States Navy graduate Chase Church.
UPDATE: The identity of the pedestrian struck by a Metra train has been released. Chase Church of Laguna Niguel, California, a United States Navy graduate, was with a group of other recent Navy graduates who were crossing the tracks or were near the tracks at Highwood and Green Bay Road Wednesday night. Chase Church was struck and killed. He had been training to be a Navy medic at the station’s Naval Hospital Corps School, which is a 14-week program at Naval Station Great Lakes. He had graduated with distinction by scoring 90 percent and above on hospital corps tests, which earned him the opportunity to continue training at the Naval surgical school in San Antonio, Texas.
Highwood police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:15 p.m. to a report that a Metra train hit a male pedestrian at Green Bay Road and Highwood Avenue near the Highwood Metra Station.
Train No. 343 hit a pedestrian on the Union Pacific/North Line Metra train heading to Kenosha. The train was stopped at Highwood’s station tonight due to a “pedestrian incident,” for accident scene management and investigation. Train No. 343 is an outbound (northbound) train that does not make a scheduled stop at the Highwood Metra train station. Train No. 343 was scheduled to stop at 5:53 p.m. at the Highland Park station south of Highwood, and then the Fort Sheridan station at 5:58 p.m. There are train gates and flashing red lights at the intersection of Highwood Avenue and Green Bay Road.
The train was scheduled to arrive in Kenosha at 6:40 p.m.
Several additional inbound and outbound trains on the Union Pacific/Metra North Line were stopped approaching the Highwood station.
Train service in the vicinity resumed about 8:50 p.m.

My son along with his fellow Naval Corpsmen were not trying to beat the train; get your story right. Instead of being in a hurry to get a story out; you should get the facts first. This is slanderous, to make my son look like a fool. YOUR STATEMENTS ARE INCORRECT…CHASE DOES NOT RUN IN FRONT OF TRAINS, they never saw or heard it…GET IT??????
Patti Church, mother.
I will agree, this news article did not have all its facts straight about that night.
Well what are the facts then, Daginni. Is the name wrong? Is the train wrong? Is the time wrong? Were the gates not flashing?
He was not crossing in the street where there are gates; there are NO GATES at the pedestrian crossing; that is the problem; they need to install gates. THEY NEVER SAW OR HEARD THE TRAIN COMING; DON’T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE UNLESS YOU HAVE ALL THE FACTS; THE MEDIA HAS IT WRONG…WRONG…WRONG….
There are no gates at that crossing. Your picture is wrong; your story is wrong…media should not be so quick to print a story without all the facts.
