Des Plaines police received a report about 6:05 AM Wednesday of a robbery and stolen taxi cab at the Subway at Rand and Miner. Police received a report that a white minivan Rosemont Elite taxi cab #133 was stolen by a male/black offender. The vehicle was last seen by the victim fleeing northwestbound on Rand Road. The victim/cab driver was not injured.
The vehicle was spotted by a Morton Grove police officer about 6:10 a.m. near Lavergne and Old Orchard Road near Old Orchard Shopping Center. A pursuit started northbound on Skokie Boulevard (Route 41) and then east on Glenview Road.
The pursuit continued to Crawford Avenue and turned southbound, then westbound on Dempster, and north on Keeler Avenue. The suspect then fled with the taxi eastbound on Suffield. The offender then turned southbound on Crawford again. The chase continued south on Crawford to westbound Touhy and passed Skokie Boulevard and I-94. The offender then fled northbound on Niles Center Road to Howard Street westbound.
The offender then turned northeastbound on Gross Point Road. The pursuit was terminated for safety about Lincoln Avenue. The offender was last seen by the Morton Grove police officer northeastbound at Gross Point Road passing Lincoln Avenue just after 6:20 a.m. The chase proceeded through intersections and sidestreets of residential neighborhoods with reports of speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.
Police were waiting for the suspect thanks to communications on the Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network (ISPERN). Next, Evanston, Skokie, and Wilmette police began the pursuit, running eastbound on Dempster about 6:40 a.m.
The pursuit passed Linden and Central, and continued northbound Sheridan to Wilmette and onto Green Bay Road. The offender then returned to Evanston, traveling southbound on Sheridan and passing the Bahai Temple and through the Northwestern University campus. After the suspect proceeded down the wrong way of a one-way street at Northwestern University, police closed in on the taxi without activating their emergency lights. Police continued following, keeping a considerable distance behind the vehicle. At many times the police were not visible, but the vehicle was followed by news helicopters in the dark with the police about one-quarter mile behind the taxi.
WLS-TV Chopper 7 HD and WGN-TV SkyCam helicopters were covering the chase and helped police pickup the chase, which ended in Chicago, where the taxi eventually clipped a school bus, and hit a street sign or street light pole near Touhy and Clark or North Clark and West Columbia in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The offender climbed out a damaged door on the side of the car that hit the pole. The suspect fled on foot about one block, and was tackled by a fast-sprinting Chicago police officer.
