Las Vegas police responded about 4:00 a.m. Tuesday to a report of an armed robbery at the Bellagio Hotel-Casino. An armed casino bandit escaped on a motorcycle with $1.5 – $2 million worth of gambling chips from the Bellagio hotel-casino.
In rapid fashion, the offender walked into the casino pit area wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet as he displayed a gun in a casino pit area and demanded chips. No shots were fired and no one was injured, but the offender was able to obtain possibly $2 million worth of casino chips. The offender fled on foot, and sped away westbound on Flamingo Road on a black sport-style motorcycle.
Detectives are reviewing video and camera images of the robbery that occurred just before 4 a.m. Tuesday at the Las Vegas Strip resort.
The security concern is that the chips could be gradually cashed in anywhere on the Las Vegas strip. But the chips probably had an embedded electronic chip called RFID (radio frequency identification) or serial numbers. Police and security could be alerted when the chips arrive to be cashed in. Understandably, the Bellagio and police are not giving details about the chips.
Cash is located behind cages in a more secure location.
