Aurora police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:00 p.m. Wednesday May 16, 2018 to a crash involving an Aurora Fire Department rescue ambulance and a minivan at Galena Blvd and West Street. Nine people were injured.

Police said the Aurora Fire Department ambulance was transporting a patient and had its lights and sirens activated when it was T-boned by a minivan at the intersection of Galena Boulevard and West Street about 4 p.m. However aerial video appears to show that the minivan was T-boned on the driver’s side by the front end of the ambulance. The minivan appeared have moderate to severe damage on the driver’s side, while the Aurora Fire Department Ambulance 1 showed little damage on the front-end or the passenger side. The driver’s side of the ambulance was not visible from the aerial shots.

There was no initial word on the severity of injuries or any of the victims’ conditions.

Police were urging people to avoid the intersection if possible while an extended accident investigation was underway. Galena Boulevard was closed between Root Street and Spencer Street.

An Aurora Fire Department rescue ambulance was previously involved in a serious rollover ambulance crash about 3:27 a.m. on Tuesday January 3, 2017 at Ogden Avenue and Aurora Avenue in Naperville. The Aurora Fire Department ambulance in January 2017 was returning from the hospital, and was not transporting a patient. The other vehicle that crashed with the ambulance also crashed into a pole after impacting the ambulance.
