Alan Grayson Exposed for Lifting Video Clips of Daniel Webster Speech to Misrepresent the Opposite Meaning of What Was Said

Somebody didn’t do his research. His name is Cenk Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks.

Cenk Uygur praised Alan Grayson’s ad, saying ‘”Strength Works.” Rather than backing down to conservatives, Uygur suggests ‘we’ should “punch them in the mouth.” Uygur then continues by playing the audio of Mike Singletary’s press conference attributing his words “we go out and we hit people in the mouth” to politics, and implying that Singletary’s word “hit people in the mouth” comment was about the way to handle conservatives. Singletary was talking about executing play on the football field (see that video at the bottom of this article).

The ad that Uygur praises is a dishonest ad that has received criticism from Factcheck.org and the Orlando Sentinel. Grayson began running a 30-second commercial calling Webster “Taliban Dan” and warning viewers that “Religious fanatics try to take away our freedom, in Afghanistan, in Iran and right here in Central Florida.” FactCheck has been critical of Grayson’s attacks on Webster, calling them false accusations, edited to make Webster say the opposite of what he actually said. The Orlando Sentinal also reprimanded Grayson for taking Webster’s comments out of context and twisting the meaning of his words. Some polling has showed Grayson trailing Webster, though Grayson claims his internal polling shows otherwise.

We thought Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida reached a low point when he falsely accused his opponent of being a draft dodger during the Vietnam War, and of not loving his country. But now Grayson has lowered the bar even further. He’s using edited video to make his rival appear to be saying the opposite of what he really said.

In a new ad, Grayson accuses his Republican opponent Daniel Webster of being a religious fanatic and dubs him “Taliban Dan.” But to make his case, Grayson manipulates a video clip to make it appear Webster was commanding wives to submit to their husbands, quoting a passage in the Bible. Four times, the ad shows Webster saying wives should submit to their husbands. In fact, Webster was cautioning husbands to avoid taking that passage as their own. The unedited quote is: “Don’t pick the ones [Bible verses] that say, ‘She should submit to me.’ “

Fox News shows how Grayson lifted video clips out of context from the original video of Dan Webster’s speech in Nashville during the summer of 2009.

Daniel Webster (born April 27, 1949) is an American air conditioning contractor, businessman, and politician from Florida. A resident of Winter Park, Florida, Webster moved to Florida at the age of seven, and has been a resident since. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1971 with an engineering degree. Returning to Orlando, Florida, he began working at the family air conditioning and heating business. In 1979, Webster decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives after becoming dissatisfied with the decisions of local and state governing bodies.

He was first elected to the House in 1980. In 1996, he became the first Republican Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives in the 122 years since Reconstruction. After reaching the legal term limits for a State Representative in 1998, Webster ran for the Florida Senate; after winning, he continued to be re-elected, serving ten years from 1998 to 2008. In the Senate, he was Majority Leader and head of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Webster is the longest serving legislator in Florida history. He is currently running for the United States House of Representatives in Florida’s 8th congressional district against Democratic incumbent Alan Grayson.

Alan Mark Grayson (born March 13, 1958) is an American attorney who is currently serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 8th congressional district. The district includes just over half of Orlando, including Downtown, as well as Celebration, Walt Disney World and part of Ocala. An outspoken liberal Democrat, Grayson defeated Ric Keller, a four-term incumbent Republican in the 2008 congressional election. He is currently running for re-election against Republican Daniel Webster.

Cenk Uygur began a talk show in the mold of a public access show he had done previously called The Young Turk. With the help of friend Ben Mankiewicz whom he had previously worked with, his childhood friend Dave Koller, and Jill Pike they began The Young Turks. Three interns have become full time crew.
