Robert Johnson, age 33, of Machesney Park is charged with one count of bank robbery by force or violence, the suspect in an armed robbery of the Old Second National Bank in Elburn, 749 South Main Street, Elburn, on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. The FBI reports Johnson took $119,600 from the bank after making tellers open the bank’s vault.
According to the FBI complaint filed, Johnson was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up and black sunglasses, when he entered the Old Second National Bank at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday and jumped over the counter.
“The robber said words to the effect of, ‘I need you to open the vault right now,'” the complaint states.
Two tellers entered the two codes needed to open one side of the vault. Johnson took money from one side of the vault and put it in a black trash bag.
Allegedly, Johnson then told the tellers to open the other side of the vault. He then took a clear, sealed plastic bag, containing $40,000, and put it in the trash bag.
Johnson jumped back over the teller counter, and fled the bank in a black GMC Envoy.
A customer making a deposit at the bank’s drive-up window saw the robbery, called 911, and followed the Envoy out of the parking lot until police caught up with the Envoy.
After stopping Johnson, Elburn police said they found five live rounds of ammunition in one of Johnson’s pockets. A resident who owns property along the route Johnson took while fleeing the bank, called police to report that a loaded gun, with an ammunition magazine was found on the property. Ammunition matched ammunition in Johnson’s possession, and the gun is believed to have been tossed out of Envoy while Johnson was fleeing.
Johnson was transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center, 71 West Van Buren St, Chicago, where he is being held before his next court date.
