Christopher Wheatley, 31, was carrying about 75 pounds of ax and a hose up a fire escape to fight a grease chute fire at the Avec restaurant, 615 W. Randolph, when he fell about 35 feet about 12:30 a.m. Monday. Christopher Wheatley was working out of the firehouse for Engine 5 and Truck 2 at 324 South Des Plaines Street when he slipped with the heavy equipment at the fire scene. The fire scene building is a four-story building.
Wheatley was rushed to Stroger Hospital in very critical condition, and was pronounced dead at 1:19 a.m. Monday.
Wheatley became a paramedic in 2000 and a firefighter in 2008. He was engaged, and is also survived by his father, his mother and a sister.
Christopher Wheatley was known as a caring man in the community. He contributed his time every year to the annual Bear’s Care gala, and was an avid Chicago Bear’s fan.
