Cary police and Crystal Lake police responded to a series of crimes involving the same suspect, but the suspect was able to flee police on foot after he crashed a car that he stole.
Cary police responded about 9:00 p.m. Wednesday April 18, 2018 to Bob’s Amoco BP Station, 400 Silver Lake Road, Cary, to a report of a stolen auto. A woman was away from her vehicle when a man jumped into her car and drove off.
About 9:30 p.m. Wednesday Crystal Lake police responded to a report of a vehicle crash involving a traffic signal at Randall Road and McHenry Avenue. The driver hit an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) box that controls traffic signals, but was able to leave the scene with the vehicle. When police arrived the vehicle was gone, but crash debris remained at the scene.
Later a McHenry County Sheriff’s deputy found the crashed vehicle near Cardinal Wines & Liquors, 305 West Virginia Street in Crystal Lake — about 5 miles away from the initial auto theft crime scene. When the deputy approached the car, the male suspect bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
No arrests had been made as of Thursday night, and police are searching for the suspect and investigating the crimes.
