Thousands of fans took to the streets of Chicago Friday for a ticker tape parade honoring the Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks. Chicago won their first Cup since 1961 on Wednesday, beating the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.
The City of Chicago estimated that 2 million people attended the event, which beats record turnouts for the White Sox’s World Series celebration in 2005 any of the six Grant Park rallies during the Bulls’ championship celebrations of the 1990s.
At least 75 people were taken to nearby hospitals — some alcohol related illnesses and injuries, and some heat-related illnesses. The Chicago Fire Department called for a 2ND Alarm EMS Task Force Box, which brought mutual aid rescue ambulances from about 20 suburbs. Ambulances staged at the Chicago Fire Academy. Many victims requiring medical aid were collected to an near Lower Wacker and Lower Michigan before being transported to a hospital.
