Thousands of tourists are flocking to the Tidal Basin in Washington to catch a glimpse of the cherry blossom trees in their full glory. (April 6)
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C. The festival commemorates the gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to the city of Washington, D.C.
Mayor Ozaki donated the trees on March 27, 1912 to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan, and also to celebrate the continued close relationship between the United States and Japan.
The Yoshino cultivar is the most common cherry tree near the Potomac River andWahington in Washington D.C. — found encircling the Tidal Basin. Of the initial gift of 12 species of 3,020 trees, The Yoshino Cherry (70% of total) and Kwanzan Cherry (12.6% of total) are the most prevalent.
