Hoffman Estates Fire Department responded to a structural collapse at the former Menards building at Higgins Road, just east of Barrington Road (2300 East Higgins Road) at about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. Early reports are that one person was trapped under collapsed debris, and was extricated from the debris by 4:50 p.m. The extra alarm box for technical rescue was struck out at 4:54 p.m.
Fire Departments from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Schaumburg, South Barrington, Streamwood and other communities are responded to assist Hoffman Estates. The rescue site is directly across from Hoffman Estates Fire Station 22.
A part of the building (north wall) is still unstable, and a collapse zone has been setup. The building was set for demolition, and the demolition is going to continue this evening.
Some crowd control procedures are underway for bystander safety — particularly at Blackberry Lane and Harwington Place.
