Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:43 PM Tuesday February 20, 2018 to a report of smoke from an electrical vaul in the northwest parking garage at Northwest Community Hospital, 800 West Central Road Arlington Heights, Il . Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of smoke coming from a basement electrical closet in the northwest parking garage.
Police on the scene at the Busse Center for Specialty Medicine garage, reported that an employee saw smoke, but no flames inside the parking garage.
A hospital security guard met firefighters at the scene, and reported a there was a problem with an electrical closet in a lower level.
Engine 2’s crew reported smoke coming from an electrical closet.
Firefighter crews from Squad 1, Engine 2 and Mount Prospect Engine 12 entered a smoky electrical room with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA tanks) and determined there was no active fire. They determined they had smoke and no heat. Firefighters reported burnt out equipment with no active fire by 1:57 p.m.
Firefighters reported significant smoke in an electrical room with a CO (carbon monoxide) reading of 200 ppm. CO was zero in the parking garage. Since there was no active fire, firefighters were ordered to exit the room, and wait for and assignment after ComEd’s arrival.
ComEd was requested to expedite to respond to an unknown electrical problem in an electrical vault in the Northwest Community Hospital parking garage. Firefighters connected hoses to standpipes in the parking garage in case active fire developed.
ComEd responded quickly and isolated the problem. Next, firefighters ventilated smoke and harmful gases out of the area. CO levels in the parking garage near the vault elevated slightly, as smoke and gases were cleared entirely from the area. The fire in the vault was out, and firefighters completed ventilation by about 2:58 p.m.
