Armed Robbery, Shooting Victim at Warehouse Property on Hintz Rd Near Wheeling Rd, Wheeling

Wheeling police officers responded about 10:00 a.m. Sunday, April 13, 2025 to a report of an armed robbery at WareSpace, 301 West Hintz Road in Wheeling. Warespace is a building with small warehouses for rent.

Upon arrival, officers located a 30-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Wheeling Fire Department paramedics were also dispatched, and the victim was immediately transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. The victim underwent surgery, and is in stable condition, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

A preliminary investigation indicates the victim had arranged to meet the suspects to purchase power tools. During the transaction, the victim became aware that the circumstances were misrepresented. A struggle ensued, resulting in the victim being shot twice. The suspects fled the scene in a white van, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

NOTE: There appears to be inconsistency in the report from Wheeling Police Department Deputy Chief Al Steffen. In the press release, the opening sentence states that police responded to a report of an armed robbery. In a later statement, Steffen writes, “the victim had arranged to meet the suspects to purchase power tools.” It’s possible this is a poorly written statement by Steffen, and it was not the victim purchasing the power tools; it may have been the victim that was selling the power tools, and then the victim was robbed and shot.

The press release from Deputy Chief Al Steffen did not provide information regarding whether the power tools were a loss, and did not provide information regarding the estimated value of the power tools.

The Wheeling police station at 1 Community Boulevard (off of Dundee Road) is available as a parking lot safe spot for commercial transactions, where the location is covered by a security camera.

The investigation remains active. Authorities believe the shooting is an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Wheeling Police Department. The Wheeling Police Department non-emergency telephone number is 847-459-2632.

“A strong majority of Wheeling Police Department police officers are calling for Chief Jamie Dunne to be placed on administrative leave until his retirement date of July 4, 2025, and for Deputy Chief Al Steffen to be dismissed effective immediately.”
