A man was shot a killed by police in Aurora, Illinois, after earlier dragging a police officer from his car in nearby Geneva early Wednesday morning, March 19, 2025 (CBS Chicago). YouTube Tips ⓘ

Aurora Police responded about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2025 to a mutual aid request attempting to locate a person wanted in connection with aggravated battery to a Geneva police officer — a hit-and-run incident that involved a suspected DUI driver that dragged the Geneva police officer.

After obtaining the license plate of the vehicle and a description of the offender, officers located the vehicle traveling southbound on Lake Street near Galena Boulevard. Aurora police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. A vehicle pursuit began, and ultimately, the driver of the vehicle traveled northbound Route 25. As the vehicle approached Ashland Avenue, officers successfully deployed stop sticks, and the driver of the vehicle came to a stop a short distance later, according to the Aurora Police Department.

As officers attempted to contact the driver, the driver displayed a weapon, and two Aurora police officers discharged their firearms at the driver. This resulted in the driver being struck by gunfire. Officers rendered aid to the individual until he was transported to a local hospital by Aurora Fire Paramedics. The individual was pronounced deceased a short time later.

An investigation into the officers’ actions is being conducted by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for officer-involved deaths.

According to the Geneva Police Department, the Geneva Police officer was injured about 1:28 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2025 after being dragged by a car he was investigating in a business parking lot.

The Geneva officer noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the lot at 1:28 a.m. on the 1500 block of South Randall Road. The officer noticed the driver may allegedly have been intoxicated and asked him to exit the vehicle.

Instead, the man started the car and drove away, dragging the officer a short distance in the parking lot. The man fled the area, but the vehicle description and license plate were passed along to neighboring law enforcement agencies.

The Geneva Police officer was seriously injured and transported by the Geneva Fire Department to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital. He is listed in stable condition, and his injuries required surgery.

In addition to the police-involved shooting, the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is overseeing the investigation involving the driver, and the dragging of the Geneva police officer.

Initial video while shooting investigation was underway early Wednesday at the scene of a traffic stop Aurora’ east side, in the area of South Broadway Street and Hazel Avenue. All lanes of South Broadway St. between Hazel Ave. and Ashland Avenue were closed for several hours Wednesday morning as police investigated the scene (WGN News). YouTube Tips ⓘ
