South Elgin Fire Investigation Looking at Mini Refrigerator After House Fire on Kateland Way

Police officers from South Elgin and firefighters and paramedics from South Elgin Fire and Countryside Fire District responded about 11:52 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2025 to a report of a house fire in the block of 600 Kateland Way in South Elgin.

Within minutes of initial dispatch, South Elgin and Elgin Fire companies arrived on scene, performed a coordinated fire attack, and a primary search on each level of the residence.

Firefighters discovered the fire was located in a second-floor bedroom which had vented through a window and extended into the attic of the home. One resident was at home at the time of the house fire, and was able to evacuate safely after discovering the fire.

Fire companies were able to bring the fire under control within 17 minutes of initial dispatch. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated but believed to have been caused by a mini refrigerator. There was significant fire and smoke damage to the second floor of the structure which left the home uninhabitable. The estimated dollar loss is approximately $250,000. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries as a result of this fire. The home had functioning smoke detectors which alerted the homeowner to the fire.

The South Elgin Fire and Countryside Fire District was assisted by Elgin FD, Fox River FPD, St. Charles Fire Department, and Hanover Township Emergency Services.

Additional fire agencies provided mutual to the South Elgin Fire and Countryside Fire District with change of quarters coverage. Firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers from Hoffman Estates Fire Department, East Dundee Fire Protection District, Burlington Fire Protection District, and Carol Stream Fire Protection District were assigned change quarters.
