Rain Delay at Nascar Daytona 500 with Line of Thundershowers Passing Through

The Daytona 500 begins about 2:00 PM ET Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida — the first race of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series. The race course is 2.5 miles, and 200 laps for 500 miles, weather permitting. Air temperatures were in the low 80s this morning in Daytona Beach, but are expected to cool into the 50s. The air temperature dropped 15 degrees with the arrival of the thundershowers.

Officials are hoping that the line of thundershowers will pass and the race will resume.

A line of showers and isolated storms just ahead of a strong cold front was forecast to reach Leesburg to Daytona Beach closer to 2-3 PM this afternoon and then continue southward across east central Florida as it gradually weakens through the late afternoon and evening. Even if this band of convection is lacking any lightning activity, the showers themselves will still be able to produce strong gusts up to 40 to 45 mph, especially as it progresses southward through the I-4 corridor.

Weather Radar at 1:50 p.m shows precipitation with clearly defined line of precipitation moving east with internal cells moving northeast in the line.
