Firefighters and paramedics from Carpentersville Fire Department and West Dundee Fire Department, and law enforcement officers from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Carpentersville Police Department responded around 6:00 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2025 to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and multiple vehicles in the area of Route 31 and Miller Road in unincorporated Carpentersville.
A well-regarded butcher in Lake in the Hills area killed in a pedestrian accident when he was struck by multiple vehicles on Route 31 near Brunner Family Farm in Dundee Township between Algonquin and Carpentersville.
Tom Yucuis, wearing all dark clothing, was walking on southbound Route 31 near Miller Road in the direction of his home in East Dundee when he was struck by a Chevrolet Cruze, a black Acura sedan, and a gray Cadillac sedan — all being driven southbound on Route 31. The drivers of the three vehicles called 9-1-1, and waited for police officers to arrive.
Paramedics on scene pronounced Tom Yucuis deceased at the scene. The Kane County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Thomas Yucuis, 69, of East Dundee.
No charges or citations were issued to any of the drivers — the male driver of the Chevrolet Cruze, age 49 of Lake Villa; the male driver of the Acura sedan, age 59 of Crystal Lake; and the male driver of the Cadillac, age 36 of Algonquin.
Route 31 was closed in both directions during emergency operations at the scene and the investigation at the scene.
Route 31 (Western Avenue) is a two-lane state highway (one lane in each direction) with asphalt shoulders. The Speed Limit on Route 31 is 50 MPH according to Google Street Maps images captured October 2018 and August 2023. There is a walk/bike path on the west side of Route 31, just south of Miller Road, but access to the path connects to Route 31, not Miller Road. There is a grass parkway between Route 31 and the walk/bike path.
The intersection of Route 31 and Miller Road in Dundee Township, and the area Route 31 nearby, is known to local residents as a dangerous area.
The road surface was above freezing at the time of the crash.
