If you see new snow on the ground Sunday morning, it’s probably mostly snow blown off your roof and nearby snow-covered ground. A total of one-half inch of snow was possible overnight, but there was no significant snowfall. A blustery north northwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph was blowing snow last night. The low temperature around 25°F was surprisingly mild, compared to the upcoming five forecast morning lows, which will be very cold at less than 10°F with wind chills between -10°F and -30°F possible.
Lingering cloud cover Sunday may benefit us by preventing escaping heat, and therefore keeping temperatures from reaching the lowest cold forecast.
Temperatures will start falling slowly about 1:00 p.m. Sunday after reaching a high of 26°F. The rapid falling temperatures are forecast to begin about 3:00 p.m., plunging to 8°F by midnight Sunday/Monday, and 1°F by 7:00 a.m. Monday with a Wind Chill of -16°F. A high of 9°F if forecast Monday with Wind Chill readings below zero all day.
The morning low for Tuesday is forecast to hit -3°F, with a wind chill of -18°F. A slow recovery will begin Wednesday. However, gusty winds with cold temperatures will make this entire work week uncomfortable.
The coldest areas Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Chicagoland will be just west, northwest, and north of the Arlington Heights area — including Elgin, Rockford, DeKalb, Waukegan. The Arlington Heights area will be near the edge of the coldest areas in Chicagoland Monday and Tuesday.
Weather Radarat overnight and up to 11:30 a.m. showed precipitation stable in size and moving north-northwest to south-southeast, with lake effect snow. However, there was little or no observed snow in the area.
