
Firefighters and paramedics from Harvard Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded about 9:13 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2025 to a report of a two-vehicle crash at Route 23 and North Olbrich Road south of Harvard, Illinois. While firefighters and paramedics were en route, 911 callers reported that one of the drivers was pinned inside his vehicle.
Firefighters arrived to find a crash involving a white sedan and a pickup truck, just south of the intersection. Crews worked for approximately 20 minutes to extricate the male driver of a white sedan. The driver was transported with serious injuries. An adult female passenger in the sedan was also transported with moderate injuries.
The male driver of the pickup truck, the sole occupant, did not initially report any injuries, and declined medical attention. Route 23 was temporarily closed while emergency crews operated on scene and remained shut down to allow tow truck crews to remove the vehicles.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
Route 23 is a 2-lane rural highway with a double-yellow line and narrow shoulders. Olbrich Road is a narrow rural side road. Neither road has a Speed Limit sign posted nearby according to Google Maps Street View images captured September 2023.
The intersection of Route 23 and Olbrich Road is a “Y-type” intersection. Northbound Olbrich Road is controlled by a stop sign at Route 23, which is a right-hand turn for northbound motorists on Route 23, and a left-hand turn for southbound motorists passing Olbrich Road.
There is a warning sign for an upcoming “Y-type” intersection for motorists in both directions on Route 23.
There is a warning sign for an upcoming stop sign for motorists northbound on Olbrich Road, but there is no warning sign for a “Y-Type” intersection.
