The Barrington Police Department announced late Monday, February 17, 2025, that a DUI suspect has been arrested connected to the fatal crash that killed a Glenview police officer on his way to work early Sunday morning.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, at approximately 4:09 a.m., a fatal motor vehicle crash occurred on Northwest Highway (Route 14) in Barrington. A 2020 Kia Forte, driven by 23-year-old Christopher Lopez of the 400 block of Alma Terrace in Cary, collided with a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 43-year-old Glenview Police Officer Robert Fryc of Cary.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Lopez, traveling northwest on Northwest Highway in the 200 south block, veered into the southeast bound lanes, striking Fryc’s vehicle. The Barrington Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene promptly. Fryc was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Following the crash, Lopez was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). He was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for further DUI testing.

After reviewing the facts of the investigation, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of reckless homicide (Class 3 Felony) against Lopez. On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Lopez will be transported to the Cook County 3rd District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows for a detention hearing.

Glenview police officers, especially, are mourning the sudden and tragic passing of Glenview Police Officer Robert Fryc, who was killed on his way into work in a car crash early Sunday morning in Barrington.

The Glenview Police Department has sent home many of the dayshift officers who work with Officer Fryc, and coverage of the shift is being temporarily assisted by Cook County and neighboring communities.

Officer Fryc, 43, has been with the Glenview Police Department since 2007. He was recently recognized at the Village’s Feb. 4 Board of Trustees meeting for being one of the first responders who helped save the life of a fellow officer last summer.

“Officer Fryc was more than just a colleague”” said Police Chief William Fitzpatrick. “He was a part of our family and a part of this community. Our hearts are broken by his passing, and our priority now is to support his loved ones and our department as we grieve this unimaginable loss together.”

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Officer Fryc, who just two weeks ago we recognized for his service and dedication to Glenview,” said Village President Michael Jenny. “On behalf of the entire Village, I extend our deepest condolences to Officer Fryc’s family, friends and fellow officers. When the time is right, we will come together as a community to honor and remember his service.

Investigation of the accident is being handled by the Barrington Police Department and the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County.

The Village of Glenview and Glenview Police Department ask for privacy and respect for Officer Fryc’s family and colleagues as they mourn and navigate this tremendous loss.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Barrington responded about 4:09 a.m. Sunday, February 16, 2025 to a report of a crash with injuries near Northwest Highway and Main Street in Barrington.

The crash may have involved a Kia, a Volkswagen sedan and a pickup truck (not confirmed). The scene was either a split scene or 9-1-1 callers gave separate locations and descriptions for the same crash.

A male victim with life-threatening injuries was transported, with the help of extra paramedics on board Barrington Ambulance 46, to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County is assisting Barrington Police Department with the fatal crash investigation.
