
McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies and Woodstock Fire/Rescue District firefighters and paramedics responded at 3:13 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2025 to a serious multi-vehicle crash with entrapment near Route 14 and Dean Street.
While en route, crews were advised of a possible vehicle fire at the crash scene with multiple individuals trapped, prompting an upgrade to a MABAS Box Alarm.
Upon arrival, crews located the crash with three vehicles involved on Route 14 approximately a quarter mile west of the intersection of Route 14 and Dean Street. The crash involved a black Mercedes GLA 250 subcompact crossover SUV with severe front-end damage, and a large white SUV with severe front-end damage, and a Jeep with minor damage. The Mercedes GLA 250 was located perpendicular to Route 14, facing southbound near the eastbound shoulder. The white SUV was located perpendicular to Route 14, facing southbound near the westbound shoulder.
Crash victims in the two severely damaged vehicles required extrication.
Firefighters triaged multiple patients, transporting two adults to local hospitals, one in critical condition. One adult, who had been ejected from the Mercedes GLA 250 during the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three juveniles also sustained critical injuries and were airlifted by three medical helicopters to Level 1 pediatric trauma centers.

Additional resources from Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Huntley Fire Protection District, Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts, McHenry County Emergency Management Agency, Union Fire Protection District, and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded to assist at the scene. Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Hampshire Fire Protection District, McHenry Township Fire Protection District, and Nunda Rural Fire Protection District provided station coverage during the incident, according to the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. Route 14 (US-14) passes south of downtown Woodstock, and is only a two-lane highway (one-lane each direction) with wide paved shoulders. The intersection with Dean Street, located east of the crash scene, is controlled by traffic signals. The crash scene on US-14 was east of a stretch of US-14 that curves north.
There are no Speed Limit signs posted in the area, according Google Maps Street View images captured September 2023.
Roads in the area were likely affected by snow and ice. There was recent light snow as recent as about 1:15 p.m.
