Schaumburg PD: Guest at Home, Mistaken for Intruder, Shot and Killed by Homeowner

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 7:19 a.m. Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, 2024 to a report that a 50 year-old female was shot in the back with serious bleeding and had difficulty breathing in the block of 1800 Carlisle Court in Schaumburg.




According to Schaumburg Police Department, on Wednesday, December 25, 2025 at approximately 720 a.m. Schaumburg police officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of Carlisle Court in reference a person shot inside the residence. Upon arrival, officers located Kellie Barnett, 50 years of age, from New Lenox, Illinois with a gunshot wound to her torso. Barnett was transported to Saint Alexius Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.

Detectives from the Schaumburg Police Department conducted an investigation that revealed Barnett was staying the night with her relatives who reside at the residence and was shot after one of the homeowners, Daniel Garcia, 52 years of age, woke up and allegedly mistook her for an intruder.

A 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Garcia was transported to the Schaumburg Police Department for further investigation. After hearing the facts of the incident, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a felony charge of Involuntary Manslaughter against Garcia, who was scheduled to appear in the Circuit Court of Cook County on December 27, 2024, at the Rolling Meadows Court House for a detention hearing.
