Congressman Michael McCaul: Drones Over Military Bases Are from China

Gatestone Institute senior fellow Gordon Chang weighs the national security threats coming from suspicious drones over New Jersey and New York as well as Chinese geopolitical pressures YouTube Tips ⓘ

At least 17 US military bases near Chinese-owned farmland are reportedly seeing a surge in drone activity and sightings in recent weeks. The sightings are happening near bases in Hawaii and installations in Utah, California, Maine, and Florida.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCall R-TX has been warning about the drones in focus these last couple of weeks. Sen. McCall says they’re from China.

“My judgment based on my experience, is that those that are over our military sites are adversarial and most likely are coming from the People’s Republic of China. Communist China is very good at this stuff, and we know they’ve bought land around military bases. This would be very consistent with their policy over the last couple years.”

— House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX)

Gatestone Institute Senior Fellow author of Plan Red: China’s Project to Destroy America Gordon Chang said that some the drones are connected to communist China and perhaps even a majority of them.

Chang said the increased tempo of these drone flight against our military bases is occurring at the same time as there is increased frequency of incursions and attempted incursions of these bases by Chinese and other nationals. Chang said really what is occurring is that China is preparing to attack the United States from American soil. I don’t know why we need an engraved invitation from Beijing. It’s clear what’s going to happen. We are going to get hit and we’re not taking the necessary precautions to protect these bases and to protect the American people.

Chang said base commanders in the United States don’t have the authority to shoot down drones, and they don’t have the equipment to shoot down the drones.

Chang said China is building arsenal not to deter, he added China already has enough arsenal to deter. He said China is building its arsenal so it can coerce us and others into not doing things like defending Taiwan. They saw the way Biden reacted to Vladimir Putin‘s nuclear threats before the invasion of Ukraine. They saw that Putin’s threats worked, and the Chinese are going do the same thing when they go after the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan … whomever.

The Gatestone Institute, founded in 2012, is an American conservative think tank based in New York City, known for publishing articles about U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

In November 2024, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) commended Texas Governor Abbott’s issue of two executive orders to counter the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the United States. The first executive order targeted the CCP’s harassment of Texans by directing the Department of Public Safety to identify and bring criminal charges against individuals who harass Texans on behalf of the CCP.

The second directs all state agencies and institutions of higher education to harden state systems and safeguard critical infrastructure, intellectual property, and personal information from being accessed by hostile foreign nations that attempt to infiltrate Texas.
