Local 2, the union representing Chicago’s firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics unanimously voted Thursday, December 12, 2024 that they no longer have confidence in leadership at the Chicago Fire Department, after going nearly 3 ½ years without a new contract CBS Chicago. YouTube Tips ⓘ
The City of Chicago is facing problems with the firefighters union this December.
After working for 3 1/2 years without a contract, the Chicago firefighters union Local 2 unanimously voted Thursday, December 12, 2024 that they no longer have confidence in the leadership of the Chicago Fire Department or the Mayor of the City of Chicago Brandon Johnson.
The news of the NO CONFIDENCE vote from Local 2 occurred during a budget crisis environment, but ironically while almost every alderman in the Chicago City Council plans to accept a raise for 2025. Chicago’s Mayor Brandon opted out of his auto-adjusted increase for inflation. He is scheduled to earn $221,052 in 2025.
A $300 million property tax increase was rejected after angry citizens of Chicago spoke in the public forum at the Chicago City Council meeting to reject the property tax hike proposal, and actions of the Chicago mayor that include funding for migrants while neglecting long-time residents of Chicago.
Official Letter from Local 2 …
LOCAL 2 VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE
The Membership of the Chicago Fire Fighters Union – Local 2 has unanimously voted today, that they no longer have confidence in the leadership of the Chicago Fire Department!
Chicago Firefighters and Paramedics have been working without a contract for the last 3.5 years even as these Members put out a fire on Wednesday, December 11th at the County Building/City Hall. Ironically, while these Firefighters put out that fire, the City of Chicago negotiators, once again, appeared unprepared to discuss anything relevant to the contract issues that Local 2 leadership provided months to years in advance. The Paramedics and Firefighters of Chicago are tired of being ignored and mistreated as they continue to loyally serve the citizens of Chicago.
Local 2 Members have not had a pay raise since June 2021, continue to work while understaffed daily with 4 Firefighters instead of 5 on up to 35 Engines or Trucks, and are not provided needed Battalion Chief Aides as the City continues to overwork our Paramedics on an inadequate number of Ambulances throughout Chicago. In addition, our Members ride inside 20+ year old vehicles that are in deplorable shape and have had days when there were no operational apparatuses available in the firehouse.
Within the last 2 years, Local 2 has had 4 separate Firefighter deaths and at least 3 Firefighters severely injured while working without a contract in need of drastic fire safety changes and training.
These are just some of the reasons that the Members of Local 2 have NO CONFIDENCE IN THE CFD ADMINISTRATION.
Additionally, I, Patrick Cleary, have NO CONFIDENCE in Mayor Johnson and his staff when it comes to negotiating in good faith. Had they been negotiating in good faith, we would have a contract and a safer work environment.
Sincerely,
CHICAGO FIRE FIGHTERS UNION,
Local No. 2

President
